September 28th - October 9th - Catskill Park Photo Scavenger Hunt
The Catskill Mountain Club invites you to participate in the fourth annual Catskill Park Photo Scavenger Hunt, a friendly exploration and photography contest offered as part of the Lark in the Park. This event will challenge you to explore all corners of the Catskill Park between September 28th and October 8th, 2007. For official information and rules, and to sign up for the Catskill Park Photo Scavenger Hunt, send an e-mail to info@catskillmountainclub.org anytime before 5:00pm on Thursday, September 27th, and we will send you the description and entry form. This event is free to enter, open to all, and prizes will be awarded.
Saturday, September 29th - October 9th - Mini-tour of the Beaverkill Valley Area
Not up for any hikes, canoe or bicycle trips....well you are in luck. This event is a self-guided driving tour of one of the most beautiful corners of the Catskill Park - The Beaverkill Valley Area. Before beginning this car tour, make sure you have enough gasoline. The only gas stations you will pass are in Arkville and Margaretville.
The first leg of this mini-tour includes a five-mile segment following a remote road (Cross Mountain Road) through the wilds of the Catskill Mountains. The road is in some places a very narrow dirt road (slightly more than one lane), and in other places is a somewhat better maintained, yet little-used, country road. There are only a handful of houses and the optimal speed limit is about 15 mph, sometimes as high as 25 mph. The reason for including this segment is to give the rider a feel for the dense nature of an undisturbed forest such as the early settlers might have found. For those who are less intrepid, an alternate route is available. The alternate route entails a leg up and back on the same road in order to reach Alder Lake.
